Week 4: monja blanca y plantas verdes

Hello again:) I can't believe it has nearly been 1 month of me living in Guatemala... I feel like I just got here! But here we are with February coming to an end and new adventures beginning. This past week was a nice chill week. Coming back from volcano climbing it was much needed and I felt like I could pour more energy and inspiration into my life here in Cobán. Monja Blanca So this week some exciting events were taking place in the city. On the 21st, they celebrated the day of the Guatemalan national flower the monja blanca, or white nun. I joined a couple of friends to go see it at the Palacio de gobernación. At the exposition they had a live dance performance and many important looking people around. I even ran into one of my students who was probably on a field trip... (I´m pretty sure they weren't skipping school at least). It was very cool! And I learned why it is called the monja blanca. If you don't already know why, take a close look and see if you can figure it...

Week 3: Paquisis

Hello everyone!! Sorry I am a bit late to post... it turned into a full week here in Guate and I have had to budget my wifi access time. But I have lots of exciting adventures to share from this week! From exploring Cobán more, to experiencing my first Chipi Chipi, to Día del Cariño, volcano climbing, and best of all new friends and stories:) Exploring Cobán  First of all, last weekend I had the pleasure of exploring more of this city with a coworker and her boyfriend! They took me all around to el Calvario which is an old well known church with a beautiful view over the city! I learned more about some of the religious traditions of the region, consisting of the synthesis between Catholicism and Mayan culture. From there we went to eat churrasco at one of their favorite restaurants which was really delicious. Finally we visited their church and I got to meet some of her family, who were very kind (very concerned about how often I call my mother!), and we finished with a ride around...

Week 2: Bienvenidos a Cobán!

Hello again from Guatemala! Now I’ve realized some of you may be wondering what exactly am I doing here. And to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure myself but with each day my role is becoming more clear. So let me start from the beginning. I’m working with a US Embassy English Language Program in the city of Cobán in Alta Verapaz. It’s a city in the middle northeastish of the country. It is very warm in the mid day but cooler at night and in the morning. Everyone has been telling me that the weather can be very unpredictable here though so we shall see what it has in store!                                          After we had finished the conference in Xela, we drove up to Cobán. We left around 10am and got in around 7pm so it was a long day of travel, but I enjoyed the views as we passed through the mountains. I began my time here at a hotel that my coworkers recommended and they serve...
